Walking Bus

We walk to school on Thursdays!

The Walking Bus is a group of children who walk to school on Thursday mornings from Killiney Hill car park to GKNS. They meet in the car-park at 8.15am and leave for school at 8.20am. Smaller  children walk at the front. A group of parents have volunteered to chaperone them and oversee their safety as they walk along together on the footpath and cross the road safely. The children wear high-viz vests for safety and the adults are provided with STOP signs. The rota for parents is organised by Ms Darling. She also collects data of numbers participating each week and the “Golden Shoe” Trophy is awarded to the class or classes with the highest number taking part. Certificates are awarded to the classes with the most participants who come actively to school.

Any parent is welcome to walk with the bus even if they are not on the rota. More parent volunteers to join the rota would be greatly appreciated. Even if a parent cannot volunteer to help, they may drop their child off at the starting point provided that they speak to the volunteers in charge on that day. If there is severe weather, the parents in charge on the day can decide to cancel the walking bus. They should wait to inform any parents or children that may arrive that the walking bus is cancelled on that day.

The first Walking Bus started on Thursday 8th March 2012. Some families have been walking on the Walking Bus every year as have the majority of parent volunteers. Getting some exercise and fresh air before school is a wonderful way to start the day. The children enjoy chatting with their friends as they walk along. All new participants will be very welcome.
