Green Schools

We here at GKNS are proud to call ourselves a Green School. We have been participating in the Green Schools Programme for the last 14 years. Promoting long-term, whole-school action for the environment, Green Schools is a student-led programme with involvement from the wider community. The programme is operated and coordinated by An Taisce.

Every year, we form a student committee comprising two students each from 3rd class, 4th class, 5th class, and 6th class. This committee works closely with the Green Schools Coordinator and other members of the Green Committee, including staff members.

To date, we have earned six Green Flags under the following themes:

  1. Litter and Waste
  2. Energy
  3. Water
  4. Travel
  5. Biodiversity
  6. Global Citizenship – Litter and Waste

Each theme involves a two-year, seven-step programme of planning and action. This process culminates in a visit from a representative of Dún Laoghaire–Rathdown County Council, who, along with An Taisce, sanctions the receipt of a Green Flag.

We are currently working towards our 7th Green Flag – Global Citizenship – Energy. This theme focuses on raising awareness about the damaging effects of traditional fossil fuels while promoting renewable energy sources and sustainable practices. Our aim is to further reduce energy consumption as a school community.

The Global Citizenship aspect of this flag is a wonderful addition to the Green Schools Programme. It involves exploring the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), helping us understand how our small actions—positive or negative—impact the global community.

We are excited to continue our journey toward earning our 7th Green Flag: Global Citizenship – Energy.
